The Trek For Life Campaign consisted of three main areas, the physical and mental preparation of the team, fund raising events prior to the trek and the trek itself.

The campaign kicked off in August 2004 when Shawn signed up to join an American Group planning to trek up Kilimanjaro in aid of an American charity, Shawn joined in aid of the three Maltese Charities. To do this he would have to lose thirty kilograms, get fit and give up smoking and all by the 14th February 2005.

Gerald immediately joined and brought the KCCO into the equation. The Mkombozi Orphanage was something the team discovered whilst in Tanzania. Both men and their progress were being followed by the local media, the media constantly encouraged the public to donate towards the named charities.

On the 14th December 2005 the pair learnt that the trek was being postponed, the organiser was not able to guarantee a new date, so they decided to go it alone and they organised the trek to take place in July. The local media and other supporters decided to drop their support for the campaign as their confidence in the campaign waned the moment they heard about the postponement.

Shawn and Gerald thus took to organising interesting and unique fund raising events to generate public interest and support for the campaign. The change in dates brought blessings in many ways. People the duo had never met came to their aid and two more friends were now able to join the trek, Patrick and Douglas.

It is our pleasure here to thank the many wonderful people that supported us, from our families, the general public, Ian Woodall, Ira Losco, Marting Sapiano, Joey “Iz-Zebbugi”, the amazing choir VOICES, Studio Seven and all our other sponsors.

All funds raised were donated to the charities, every fund raising event was guaranteed by Shawn’s persona finance and all costs related to the trek and related travel were paid for by the team’s own personal funds.

Please enjoy some of our experiences by browsing the photo albums and listening to the radio interviews recorded whilst talking live from Kili itself.

Thank you
